Paint-a-Thon 2000
   Pat McCabe

I almost cried. Heading down in a rush to put up signs and bring lemonade and ice and tea and cookies to our refreshment stand for the artists at the river, I could see them everywhere. There were painters at each bend in the road carefully standing above the Río Grande, stroking on canvas or board, pouring their vision of the river out among the willows and rocks and whispers and gurgles of flowing water. There were men and children out fishing in between the artists and by 9am the river was running over with a gathering of quiet relatives each absorbed in the task of reeling in life from the water.

Gallery Elena, named for Elena Vigil, was a-buzz in the early afternoon as they readied for an unknown number of artworks to come in wet, fresh, and alive. As it turned out there were over 70 pieces of heartworks to be hung and a hundred or more souls to love, admire and bid like crazy on them. Food, paint, laughter, rootbeer and margaritas flowed over the old adobe gallery that was once the Vigil residence. Mrs. Vigil seemed happy watching from a seat by the fountain. Beautiful and delicious food from restaurants all over Taos helped us begin the auction in earnest and by the time the dust had settled and the auctioneer, Satori Gregorakis, had barked his final "Sold!" we had raised over $12,500 for the Río Grande.=

Thanks to an enormous community effort the Third Annual Amigos Bravos Paint-A-Thon & Art Auction was a fabulous success.
