Once again Amigos Bravos annual Paint-a-thon and Gala Auction event has brought together artists, art enthusiasts and environmentalists for the purpose of protecting and restoring the Rio Grande watershed.
This years Paint-a-thon raised more than $10,000 to protect New Mexicos wild rivers!
The money raised will help Amigos Bravos continue to protect the
ecological and cultural richness of the Río Grande watershed. Amigos Bravos is working on a variety of projects including a collaboration with the Alliance for the Rio Grande Heritage to restore the Río Grande to an ecologically connected river, work to protect the silvery minnow and the cutthroat trout, and efforts to promote
sustainable development in the Red River drainage. The outpouring of support we received in the form of donated paintings, food, drink and artwork purchases will help us with the above efforts to protect, restore and honor the wild rivers of New Mexico.
Despite a sudden storm that prompted a quick rearrangement of the pre-auction cocktail party and resulted in a close call for one brave volunteers pick-up truck (a tree was blown over onto the truck by strong winds), the event was a huge success.
The day started off with artists, with paint brushes and canvases in hand, gathering along the river near the Taos Junction Bridge in Pilar. Ross (Board President) and Kristen Ulibarri spent the day handing out coffee, sandwiches and yes, even ice cream! to the artists as they worked. With the help of numerous local businesses, who donated everything from coffee to sushi, we did our best to make sure that the term starving artists did not apply for at least this one day in July! Later in the evening, artists, Amigos Bravos members, staff, volunteers, and many, many other Taoseños gathered at the Bareiss Gallery in Taos to eat and drink and to purchase the more than 70 donated pieces of artwork. This year marked the largest turnout for the Gala Auction in the four years Amigos Bravos has been hosting this annual benefit. Star volunteers and Amigos Bravos members David and Karen Douglas added to the evening by preparing their signature hand-mixed margaritas and gorgozola-nut rolled grapes. The Celtic Cactus, a local group, provided the music as attendees sipped margaritas and Artists Ale (provided by Eskes Brew-Pub) and viewed the spectacular array of artwork. The bidding was lively for both the silent and live auctions. "What a Great Party!" said Board President Ross Ulibarri.
