A Call to the Río Grande Community - Raffle for the Río 2001

Amigos Bravos, Friends of the Wild Rivers, sends out a call to all river and water lovers to support our work and build our river community. Amigos Bravos’ Annual Raffle for the Río 2001 is underway, the drawing to take place on April 27. At the tip of Baja California, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, that’s where the winners of this year’s Grand Prize Trip for two will be. The Grand Prize is a five-day, luxury trip for two to Cabo San Lucas at the Hotel Hacienda along the beach of the “marlin capital of the world.” The prize includes round-trip airfare and beachfront accommodations.

Each year Amigos Bravos tries to find the best way to get you to dig deep and support this fundraising event and each year our wonderful members rally to support the rivers and buy chances to win the trip to the sand and surf. This year will be no exception. The work at hand is vital to New Mexico’s rivers and your lucky ticket purchase will provide funds to help Amigos Bravos continue to meet the Río Grande’s biggest challenges:

  • Molycorp - The molybdenum mine located above the Red River, a tributary of the Río Grande, is a test-case for the very high restoration standards which the NM Mining Act’s words “self-sustaining ecosystem” imply. How strongly Amigos Bravos is able to help the community of Questa uphold these standards will affect not only their community and the Red River, but mining communities and rivers across the state and throughout the West. If these standards are achieved at Molycorp it will set a precedent for them to be upheld strongly wherever they are applied - at all mine sites in New Mexico and beyond.

  • A Stewardship Ethic for the Future - Amigos Bravos is looking to the younger generation as future stewards of the Río Grande. We are developing a River Education Program that will be implemented in our schools, grades K-12. At the heart of the program are the ideas that Water is Life and that what you do to water over here affects water over there and everywhere.

  • Consensus building and policy development among a diverse group of water users - Amigos Bravos believes that consensus building can be a powerful tool for protecting the health of the Río Grande. Without consensus between conservationists and traditional water users, such as tribal users and acequia users, successful policy development may not be possible. Amigos Bravos is committed to bringing these entities together for round table discussions to identify common goals and values, and then to finding water policies that will work for all.

This year we ask you as concerned members of the Río Grande community to not only give us your continued support for our largest fundraising event of the year but to look within your circle and offer like-minded friends the opportunity to be a part of the Amigos Bravos movement. A first time buyer of a raffle ticket receives a year’s membership and a chance at the Grand Prize trip for two to Cabo San Lucas.

While raising funds is critical to our work, gathering more and more voices in the Río Grande community is equally so. The Raffle for the Río 2001 is the opportunity to allow us all to meet both needs. Besides, maybe your friend will be so grateful for your introduction to Amigos Bravos and our work that they’ll take you along to the beach if they have the lucky ticket. A win/win situation, there are five great prizes this year and unlimited opportunities to make your donations count toward keeping our lifeblood, the rivers, in great health.
