As many of you know, after 35 years of stonewalling tactics, the largest mine in the Río Grande watershed has been forced to begin spending $3 million a year to start reclamation activities and withdraw 2,247 acres from future mining. The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division approved and signed Molycorps closeout plan and permit on June 3, 2002. The huge job of reclamation began this summer, and so did Amigos Bravos victory celebration.
At this years Rio Awards Ceremony, Amigos Bravos would like to honor the collective efforts made over the past fifteen years to reclaim Questa as a healthier environment in which to live, work, and raise families. The Questa community deserves this special recognition after years of struggling with the effects of mining, both its economic and environmental impacts. This years event will especially celebrate the communitys voice, so everyone can know their story.
Along with recognizing the history of community resistance to environmental pollution, special recognition will be given to the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, the Western Environmental Law Center, the Southwest Research and Information Center, Artesanos, and numerous Questa residents who remember how the story unfolded.
In addition, a special tribute will also be paid to Doug Wolf of the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, who was the lead attorney in the legal proceedings against Molycorp. Doug will be leaving for Washington, D.C. at the end of September, so before he leaves we would like to honor him and his many accomplishments.
Please plan to join us at what promises to be an outstanding celebratory event. Last years recipients will be making the awards to this years recipients of the Volunteer Award, Roberto Vigil and the RIO "Recognize it's Ours" Youth Group, as well as the Outsdanding Youth Group Students of Jardines del Bosque Summer Institute and this years Outstanding Individual recipient Jan Willem Jansens.
